Virtual Area Networks

authors: Fabrizio Meo, Giuseppe Fogliazza

The Virtual Area Network (VAN) project will provide innovative solutions, extensions and standards dedicated to industrial environments, to fill the existing gap between office communication technologies and industrial automation technology, focused on a new dimension of uniform networking of production and manufacturing processes. It will define the base of international industry plant management, advanced control and service concepts. The objectives will be achieved by a merging of existing and emerging IST and automation standards covering embedded architectures, fieldbus technologies, Ethernet, Internet technologies, real-time technologies, wireless LAN technologies, security and safety concepts.

Hi, thank you for this interesting presentation. I would like to know what are the key advantages of having a VAN system versus the standard architectures with different types of networks.

Thank you,
Gonzalo.

Many advantages:
1. it should become a standard, able to connect devices at different levels.
2. It is secure from intrusions.
3. It can be used with or without real-time performances.
4. It grants safety.
