The d

A key challenge for manufacturers is to not only design but manufacture products using a sustainable approach. Manufacturing industries have started recognising that it is their responsibility to design a sustainable manufacturing system which has less environmental impact and social disruptions and promotes wealth.

Integrating human personnel, robots, and machines in manufacturing plants using ubiquitous augmented reality and smart agents

We describe a concept for an advanced manufacturing control system – the Smart Connected Control Platform. The approach enables a higher degree of automation, efficiency and control through a holistic model, decentralized production intelligence and modern sensor technology. Integrating ubiquitous and augmented reality interfaces supports human personnel in every aspect of the production process. To prevent information overload, intelligent agents paired with a semantic model help reduce the amount of information and deliver pre-interpreted and aggregated results to the manufacturing personnel. The advantages of this new approach are discussed in three example scenarios, which deal with advanced maintenance, customized production, and error diagnosis. The major contribution of our approach is the integration of machines, transportation robots, and human personnel using a decentralized smart agent platform and ubiquitous augmented reality technology. The platform described in this paper is currently under development.

User Interfaces for Service Oriented Architectures

Service oriented architectures (SOAs) are developing more and more towards a fundamental pattern of information architectures within enterprises. The vision of loose coupling of coarse-grained components, dynamic interoperation of services with each other and semantic message routing over an enterprise service bus is particularly interesting for manufacturing enterprises that are following the approach of holonic production control. However, eventually software has to be fitted to human user’s needs. Hence, composing processes or workflows dynamically implies that a user interface has to be generated dynamically as well. In this paper, we present preliminary results of deploying dynamic workflows to SOAs.

Impact Localisation Techniques for Tangible Acoustic Interfaces

This paper describes two impact localisation techniques for tangible acoustic interfaces. A rising-edge detection method was used for the time-delay-of-arri val (TDOA) approach and a cross-correlation method for the location-template-matching (LTM) approach. These methods were experimentally investigated using objects of different materials with different types of acoustic sensors. Experimental results have shown their potential for real-time localisation of impacts using common solid surfaces (a steel whiteboard and a hard wood board) and appropriate acoustic sensors for human computer interfaces.
