Six Sigma Green Belt training for Researchers
Authors: Shirley Coleman , Tony Fouweather
Abstract
Six Sigma is a management methodology for process improvement. It has been studied and adopted by many companies and institutions since it was introduced by Motorola in the late 1980s. The benefits of Six Sigma have been widely recognised and increasingly the methodology has been applied in different contexts. The application of Six Sigma in the research process, however, has not been explored. The I*PROMS network of excellence has many PhD and other researchers and is an excellent forum in which to investigate the potential for a process improvement approach to research. ISRU have been training Six Sigma black, green and yellow belt personnel for many years and have adapted their material for a pilot run of this new application area. In conjunction with partners from IFW and Cardiff, a programme has been developed and piloted on a group of I*PROMS researchers. It was decided to focus on green belt training as that encompasses the philosophy and main concepts of Six Sigma and can be taught in 10 days over two week-long sessions; this time commitment being more appropriate for research staff than black belt training which is typically five week-long sessions spread over six months. The green belt programme is suitable for enhancing and extending into a full black belt programme. This paper describes the approach and how it differs from other applications. It includes observations from the pilot study and outlines the future plans.

Hi ...
Thank you for contributing to the conference, just have a few questions:
1. During the week did you work on a project or a case study?
2. Researchers and industrial engineers have a different view of factories, was this evident and if so what preception difference were there?
thanx,
Taufiq

Dear authors,
I have a comment & few questions.
The paper states that lean focuses on removing complexity, Six Sigma focuses on process improvement.
In my opinion, lean techniques & tools does contribute more on continuous improvement compare to removing complexity.
1. How Lean remove complexity?
2. Where Six Sigma could be applied in research?
(I'm sorry, I couldn't see it application in the research works)...
;)
