Creating a presentation
All presentations are organised as books. The first slide include the paper title, the list of authors and their affiliation. Let's have a look at how to add a new slide to the presentation:
- go to your paper
- click on create content->book page, the links on the right hand side menu with your username
- you will get the Submit book page form
- Enter the Title of the slide
- optionally enter the Path alias, best leave it empty, it will be automatically generated for you
- Check that the Parent is the title of yopur paper, or the slide you require, if you decide to structure your presentation in sections
- enter the relevant keywords, as a comma separated list of words or phrases
- IMPORTANT: select a Slide template, if you choose none then the book page won't be rendered as a presentation slide, if you want to get a filled in template, delete everything in the body, and click Preview at the bottom of the form
- Enter the text of your slide in the Body field. You can use either, the rich text editor or HTML(by switching between the different edit modes)
- don't use too many bullet points per screen - 4-5 max
- make sure that any pictures you use are not overflowing outside of the presentation area
- Use semantic markup to emphasize your point, or parts of the presentation, i.e use the different predefined sections, they mean something to the machines reading your presentation, and, hopefully, your formatting will be consistent with evry other reading material on this website
- The Weight nuber is used to order sibling slides, the smallest weight always comes first, pages with eaqual weights are ordered alphabetically
- Enter a short description of the slide in Excerpt, i.e abstract, speaker notes, etc...
- If you wish to receive emails, if somebody makes a comment, check the Subscribe box
- If you want to attach any files, for example audio narrative a video-clip, or any other related material use the Attach new file subform, don't forget to click the Attach button before you proceed
- click Preview, it is highly recommended to use the preview interface, this way you can minimise the number of clicks to finalise your slide
- click Submit
- Your slide is ready
- Alternatively, you can create a new book page (and slide), if you click on sequentially on add child page. Pay attention to the Parent field
- Alternatively, you can use any other content type available via the create content menu, and after finishing the slide, add it to the appropriate place in your presentation via the Outline tab
Anthony and I have prepared example presentations outlining this process. Have a look at it.
It might look long and scary, but it's not. Trust me it's easy. Just spend a few minutes playing with the interface and you will get the knack of it.
