Model and heuristics for scheduling in reconfigurable manufacturing environments

authors: Ricardo Galan, Ignacio Eguia, Jesus Racero

Nowadays, reconfigurable manufacturing systems are gaining research attention. Most of this research is focused on the development of reconfigurable machines, while less attention is paid to the working of the production system. This research aims at the development of a mathematical model for selecting the best set of product families and their production scheduling, from several sets of different possibilities, in the presence of alternative routeings for reconfigurable manufacturing. The model is tested with a batch of real problems from the literature. Besides, some heuristics have been developed to solve the problem when the model cannot offer the optimal solution within a reasonable computing time.
