KOBAS: Integration of Applications on Machines

This article examines a solution to a complex problem of integration, with two differentiating features: first, the great variety of the different applications and second their integration into a single production machine. The content has been extracted from the work that is being done in the European Project named Kobas, that was approved in a call focused on solving problems faced by SMEs. In this project the companies are specialized in the construction of capital goods. The article structure first starts showing the problem to be solved, will then describe the framework of the project in which the solution has been developed and finally addresses the solution itself in greater detail.

The choice of Java and XML bodes well for portability. Do you consider that KOBAS will ultimately provide an equivalent standard that companies will have to work to?

My name is Ramon Arana (Sorry but I have login problems on IPROMS!!)
That was a discussion point for the consortium. It was discussed under the scope of ontologies the idea of getting common definitions, but it was considered very ambitious and out of the scope of the project (in time and resources) where more pressure was on developing and integrating the black boxes. This question was solved considering an unique common schema for all components (needed to avoid repetitions).
