Reconfigurable Robots towards the Manufacturing of the Future
This work presents the research advances on reconfigurable robots for manufacturing applications. The differences between the fixed-anatomy and variable-anatomy robots and the promises for higher flexibility are presented. The main aspects of the reconfigurable robots are classified and discussed. The classification of the platforms and modules are presented and their characteristics are commented. Representative methods for the design, planning and control of reconfigurable robots and the relevant software for the simulation and operation of the reconfigurable robots are referenced. The paper closes with the challenges and perspectives for the deployment of the reconfigurable robots in the manufacturing systems of the future. An integrated environment and a knowledge-base for rapid configuration of the reconfigurable robot in connection with an operating system for plug and play of the components are proposed as a perspective.
