• Current approaches of applying rapid prototyping (RP) & manufacturing to sheetmetal forming are  direct and indirect rapid tooling
• Indirect rapid tooling - RP produces pattern used to cast metal tool
• Direct rapid tooling - Tool fabricated by using laser to melt metal powder
• The two approaches have several shortcomings
