Implementation of the OEE rate as a participative improvement tool

authors: Javier Santos, Gonzalo Serrats, Mikel Arcelus

This paper will demonstrate how technology can go hand-in-hand with the philosophy of Lean Manufacturing through the implementation of the OEE rate (Overall Equipment Efficiency) framed within the philosophy of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance). A case study was carried out in a company which manufactures wood panels used for exterior decoration. During the project a supported system of continuous improvement was implemented and reflected in a productivity report. This report, based on only 5 indicators, was updated before weekly meetings, allowing workers to verify the impact of the improvements they proposed. The result of this research project yielded an increase of working-line efficiency from 53.5% to 74.7%.

Hello authors,
thankyou for your excellent paper.

I am interested to know whether the true benefit of the increased machine availablility has been achieved - are production demands at such a high level that the company can actally run the machine for more time and see more profit, or is this the next step in the process ?

How do you think that OEE could contribute to the difficult task of winning more business to be able to produce more saleable product?

Richard.

Thank you for your comments,

The increase in the availability was due to solve the causes of the failures of the different equipments. Maintenance and production employees knew how to solve some of those problems, but they didn't knew if the action they were taking were succesfull or not.

The implementation of the OEE allowed them to asure their working approach showing the managers how their improvents really affected the availability.

The second question is more difficult to answer. I think the OEE rate allows making what you have to make in the best way as possible. If this can indirectly allow you to make more saleable product it will be perfect, but the goal of the OEE implementation if more technical and related to the production controls.

Javi,

Thankyou for the explanation,

I can understand that one aspect of the tool is to act as a proactive approach to management reporting before the production department came under pressure to perform better. I hope that it worked for them!

Is there further development of the practice to continue the progress in increasing the production (and reporting) performance?

Rich.

Yes, it worked perfectly (and I hope it is still doing) for the company.

I am about to prepare a proposal for being founded by the local goverment in order to develop a system to capture and allow improving performance in companies. I hope this will help the objective of improving using the same principles used in the paper.
