Generic alternative configurations
Due to its product oriented nature we can expect POMS to have capabilities that cannot be matched by FOMS, as listed in the slide. However, apparently, due to such dedicated nature, one POMS configuration may be unfit to manufacture well products with varying manufacturing requirements. FOMS, apparently are capable to fit these requirements. However, the poor ability to answer to other important market demand requirements makes FOMS to be unable to acceptably explore such a capability.
Motivation
Today’s market environment is characterized by varying product demands, fast delivery, high quality of products and good customer service. This creates company internal needs to economically match and answer these external demands. Thus, a company needs to have fast manufacturing response, high quality production, high manufacturing resources (Equip&People) utilization and varying manufacturing capabilities. This matching is only possible through flexibility which, among others, includes two fundamental dimensions: flexible and reusable manufacturing resources and easy access to manufacturing resources
