Springer-Verlag prize for best paper
Springer-Verlag, the internationally renowned publisher and associate partner of I*PROMS has agreed to sponsor a prize of books to the value of €300 for the best paper presented the IPROMS 2005 Virtual Conference.
IPROMS 2005 - An event organised by the I*PROMS NoE
The I*PROMS Network of Excellence organises its first Virtual Conference on Intelligent Production Machines and Systems.
To deliver increased competitiveness for manufacturing in 2020, there is a need to focus research on advanced production machines and systems that meet dynamic business and value drivers. Emerging soft computing and intelligent systems techniques can provide tools to help enterprises achieve goals widely regarded as critical to the future of manufacturing, including: rapid shifts in production from one product to another;...
The Virtual Conference
The virtual conference is an activity, organised in a way that participants can meet and discuss themes of common interest through the use of communication tools at a central location on the Internet.
IPROMS 2005 is an online web-based conference. Registered participants will receive user access information and instructions before the conference. During the conference, users can log in, select the sessions of their interest, view or download papers and presentations and participate in the discussions.
Conference Themes
Contributions are sought in the following and related technology areas that describe applications of intelligent computation techniques such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary algorithms and knowledge-based systems to realise:

Ultrasonic distance scanning techniques for mobile robots
Authors: D.T. Pham, Ze Ji, Anthony Soroka
Abstract
This paper discusses about the usage of ultrasound in the application of mobile robot navigation. Two methods using an array of transducers are described with theoretical analyses and practical experiments, namely the phased array and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method. These two methods are also compared with the conventional Time of Flight (ToF) method. Analyses show that the phased array of ultrasound has a number of advantages, including narrowing the beam width and efficient beam steering.
What is IPROMS 2006
IPROMS 2006, the 2006 I*PROMS NoE Virtual International Conference on Intelligent Production Machines and Systems, will take place on the Internet between 3 and 14 July 2006. IPROMS 2006 will build on the outstanding success of its predecessor, IPROMS 2005. Authors from 32 countries across five continents contributed over 100 papers to IPROMS 2005 and some 4168 registered delegates and guests from 71 countries participated in the Conference, making it a truly global phenomenon with papers and sessions often being ranked as one of the top ten pages by Google.
Papers submitted for IPROMS 2006 will be peer reviewed. Accepted articles and presentations will be accessible on-line by all registered attendees. Subsequently, papers will be printed in the book of proceedings by Elsevier. Selected papers will also have the opportunity to be developed into manuscripts for inclusion in a special issue of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture
Researchers worldwide are cordially invited to contribute original papers on topics pertinent to Intelligent Production Machines and Systems.
