Building a design ontology based on the Conjoint Trends Analysis

The information phase is a crucial phase of any design activity. It has a direct impact on the creativity involved in generating design solutions and subsequently on any future innovations. The gradual digitalization of the design process, especially where computers can aid human creativity, is progressively changing the earliest phases of the design activity, and in particular the information phase. As a routine part of the creative process, designers search for and collect inspirational materials. The TRENDS computer-based system aims to improve designers’ access to web-based resources by helping them to find appropriate materials, structure these materials in way that supports their design activities and identify design trends.

An examination of the impact of new technology on industrial designers’ search for inspirational materials

This paper considers the impact of new technology on creative industrial designers' ability to locate inspirational materials. Creative design is identified as having particular information retrieval requirements. The importance of diversity and structure in search results are examined in this context. The potential for designers' (users') search strategies and the model of information display to provide serendipity and structure is discussed. Results from interviews with designers and tests of student designers are mentioned in support, and areas for further work proposed.

Building a domain ontology for designers: towards a Kansei based ontology

As a routine part of the creative process product designers and engineering designers search for and collect inspirational materials. To aid this process, the TRENDS computer-based system aims to improve designers’ access to web-based resources, helping them to find appropriate material, structure it in a way that supports their activities and identify design trends. This is to be achieved through the development of content-based image retrieval facilities that utilise ontological referencing. The goal of this study is the definition, analysis and description of design knowledge, and experimentation which aims to extract the semantic structure used by the designers during the design process.

How to build a web-based image collection adapted to the needs of the car designers

The TRENDS European project aims at developing an image and text retrieval engine in order to support the activity of the car designers in the early stages of their design process. The study of the designers’ activity has led us to the production of an image database in which designers will find inspirational material. This database includes many visual and text material, decomposed in sectors; these sectors are adapted to the main domains in which the car designers find their influences and inspiration sources. This paper focuses on the methodology followed for the elaboration of this

Semantic-based Approach to Developing Concepts in the Automotive Industry

In today’s market place, it is essential that the product sold reflects the wants, needs and desires of the consumer; whom holds more power and awareness than ever. This is greatly evident in the automotive industry, where great time and resources are placed into creating designs that satisfy the demand of the target market. This paper focuses on identifying the requirements for a collaborative based approach to creating concepts prior to the conceptual design phase. Investigation of mood boards and trends in the automotive industry and the analysis of automotive sales brochures spawned the initial idea for the Photo Album approach. It was concluded that through considering the semantics of images, elements of the conceptual design brief could be greater appreciated, but analogous to a photo album, the series of images could create a story that represented and cemented the elements of the concept together. Relatively new technologies of folksonomies and social networking sites were considered in order to create a dynamic collaborative working environment. It was concluded that the Photo Album could be a useful reference document, however the collaborative nature and culturing of comprehension of the design brief is what gives great potential to the approach.

Semantic-based Representation and Retrieval of Content Using Concept Indexing

Previous research indicates the need for a new generation of enterprise search technology capable of managing and extracting knowledge from large Intranet and Internet collections of unstructured text. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing a semantic-based representation of content using entities and concepts. Central to this approach is the idea of concept indexing, which involves identifying instances and abstract ideas within a text document, and linking words to ontological concepts. The paper describes the concept indexing model and framework proposed as well as the concept knowledge base developed.
