Micro-structural analysis of WC-Co carbide tool in Titanium machining

In machining of titanium alloys, the high rate of tool failure is the main reason for its high manufacturing cost. In this study, WC-Co carbide tools which were fractured in Ti-6Al-4V milling process have been investigated both in the macro scale using a PG-1000 light microscope and in the micro scale using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) respectively. The results indicate that most of these tool fractures are the result of cutting edge chipping, and the chipping on the tip of tool. Further material analysis include micro structural investigation, and it mainly concentrate on the surface layer of cutting edge; the observations with SEM show micro-cracks at the surface area of cutting edge, the comparison between the cutting edge and the shank of tool indicated these micro-cracks were only occurred at surface area of the cutting edge. The tool material phase was investigated with XRD ( X-Ray Diffraction), the result indicate the Co content at the tip of tool is less than that at the shank of tool. In WC-Co carbides, the decrement of Co contents will increase the hardness of cutting edge, but also will make it more brittle, so the WC-Co tool failure is the co-work of brittleness caused by the decrement of Co contents and micro-cracks at surface layer of the cutting edge.

An exploratory data analysis estimation of the effects of the electrode material on the electrical discharge in micro EDM

When producing features and parts on the micro scale, the phenomena that take place between the electrodes in electric discharge machining (EDM) is not fully understood. A barrier to a complete exploitation of the potential natural tolerance of this process and to the further development of the process towards the production of components on the nano-scale is therefore in place. Improvements in measuring systems contribute to the acquisition of new information that often conflicts with existent theoretical models of the EDM process. Objective of this paper is to advance the experimental knowledge of the electrical discharges during micro EDM operations.

Measuring small volumes

A method for measuring small volumes of solids with irregular and complex boundaries of both convex and concave shape is presented. The term ‘small’ refers to the micro scale but can potentially be extended to the sub-micrometric domain. The proposed method is based on a white light interferometer microscope (WLI), which constitutes the source of measurement data subsequently elaborated using purpose developed numerical algorithms. The method hinges on the identification of a geometrical reference on the measurand itself. Its main benefit, therefore, is the independence of the measuring results from the positioning of the part on the instrument stage.

Electrode wear ratio and its effects on process modelling and process Capability

A basis for an analytical micro Electro Discharge Machining (micro EDM) model of electrode wear is suggested, verification of which requires experimental work with pure metals. This paper studies the influence of factors contributing to electrode-tool wear during the micro EDM process of pure metals and the effect of the electrode wear on the process accuracy and process variability. The objective of the research is to investigate the wear behavior of the electrodes and discuss the suitability of electrode wear compensation methods.
