Welcome! Croeso!

I am pleased to welcome all participants to the IPROMS* 2008 Conference for the session on Collaborative and Responsive Manufacturing Systems. I am K.W. Ng, your co-chairman for this session.

The papers in this session will be touching on the systems and models that improve and enhance collaboration between a manufacturing enterprise, its suppliers, customers, and partners so that multiple groups can work together as they set plans and policy, agree to actions, and execute operations to boost responsiveness, agility, and customer-centricity.

Please feel free to email me at NgKW1@cf.ac.uk if you have any queries or if you need any help.

Engineering of service-oriented automation systems: a survey

The evolution of manufacturing systems and the emergence of decentralized control require flexibility at various levels of their lifecycle. New emerging methods, such as multi-agent and service-oriented systems are major research topics in the sense of revitalizing the traditional production procedures. This paper takes an overview of the service-oriented approach in terms of platform and engineering tools, from the perspective of automation and production systems. From the basic foundation to the more complex interactions, service-oriented architectures and its implementation in form of web services provide diverse and quality proved features that are welcome to different states of the production systems' life-cycle.

Grand challenges and technological developments in textile manufacturing industry

This paper presents an industrial assessment model for textile industry and provides the result of the assessment of current technological developments. It highlights the importance of technical and intelligent textiles as well as automation systems. The paper presents the grand challenges to be faced by the industry and lists out the driving forces of the sector. It also recommends a simple road map to adapt to the technological developments.

Intelligent Agents based Manufacturing Systems: A formal specification derived from FRABIHO

FRABIHO constitutes a reference protomodel for distributed and intelligent engineering production systems, derived from the synthesis of the models proposed in the frame of the fractal, bionic and holonic intelligent manufacturing systems. FRABIHO formalizing becomes necessary as a previous task to the construction of tools for attending the engineering steps of intelligent systems in all its life cycle (design, implementation, production, redesign). This formalization seeks to describe the elements that will constitute the environment of modelling and simulation of an intelligent production system, conceived from the principles of Fractal, Bionic and Holonic varieties. These varieties have given rise to intelligent systems in the environment of Next Generation of Manufacturing Systems, Agile Company, Extend Company and Virtual Company.

Semantic Web-based agent applications - from design to collaborative deployment

The paper presents two original studies on using semantic Web technologies in the context of agent-oriented applications. We detail two original multi-agent platforms (Omega and ADF) and their pragmatic deployment for semantic-enriched collaboration between Web entities within an e-enterprise. Several case-studies are also provided.
