Application of design -for- manufacture (DFM) rules in CAD/CAM

authors: Mojahidul Hoque, Tamas Szecsi

In the paper, Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) Rules, Design Functionality (DF) Rules, Design for Assembly (DFA) Rules, Recommended Tolerance and Expected surface finish values are described. The rules will be included in commercial CAD/CAM packages as a tool. The rules are organised in a hieratical rules system and the designers can select the design rules from a manufacturing rules library. The designers can ensure that no design rules are violated, accurate tolerances and surface finish values are implemented during the design phase.

Very interesting paper!

I have some questions:
1 - how does the system answer when the geoemtry to satisfy two or more design rules goes in conflict?
2 - the database of design rules does take into account the material by which the part is made?

Thank you very much.

Federico.

Hi Federico,
Thank you for your questions.

1. The designer will select the processes. According to the select of processes the system will show warning massage if violate the rules. Say for drill m/c hole in a solid box. The system will copy all sufaces parameters and geoemtry. Then it will compare the standard parameters and geoemtry . If not satisfy then it will show warning massage.

2. Plastics Materials have different Manufacturing rules in same manufacturing processes. So at the moment plastics Materials will not be consider in database system. It will be developed next time. Other than plastics materials will be consider in database system.
best regards.
mojahid
