3 Participatory design

Participatory design

  • Participatory design is an approach to design that attempts to actively involve the end-users in the design process to ensure that the system designed meets their needs and is usable.
  • VTT has applied visualisation methods such as Virtual Environments (VEs) or Video Exposure Monitoring (VEM) in order
      • to enhance communication in participatory design process
      • to visualise the factors of interest, e.g. new production system layout
      • to bring together knowledge from the organisation and the experts
      • to evaluate the efficiency of alternative solutions.
The main objective in our participatory design and development process was to bring together knowledge from the organisation and the experts. Visualisation methods such as VEs or VEM were applied in order to enhance communication. This process will facilitate the start of an internal development project in the company. The process is based on the use of methods that visualise the factors of interest, e.g. new production system layout, and the participation of different personnel groups in the company. A development group formed within the company utilises the visualisation methods to search for possibilities to enhance the production system and to evaluate the efficiency of alternative solutions. The process applies a general problem-solving model (or development cycle) consisting of the following phases: 1) Identification 2) Analysis 3) Solution development 4) Implementation and 5) Evaluation.
